Ohio team wins baseball tournament in Wasilla

American Legion baseball powerhouse Napoleon, Ohio, defeated Las Vegas Sierra Vista 8-2 on Sunday at McManus Field in Wasilla to win the Todd Ryan Memorial Tournament.

Previously, Napoleon defeated Eagle River 16-1, Wasilla 14-0, and Chugiak 10-0 en route to the championship game.

The River Bandits hit seven home runs in tournament play out of spacious McManus Field's dimensions of 324, 395 and 325 feet . . . including three in the championship game.

In consolation play, Wasilla Post 35 defeated Service Post 28 by a 14-8 count.

A trio Service pitchers contributed to the Wasilla scoring by allowing nine walks and hitting two batters.

Wasilla put up 11 runs in the bottom of the third inning and was led by David Newman, who stroked three doubles and added a single for a 4 for 4 performance with four RBIs and two runs scored.

For Service, Jake Ridley, Trace Woodruff and Aaron Miller notched two hits apiece.

Napoleon, Las Vegas and Service head to Kenai for the Bill Miller Wood Bat Invitational joining Bartlett Post 29, Edmonton, Alberta, and host Kenai Post 20 in games Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

All three teams from Outside also will play in the 17th annual BP Invitational at Mulcahy Stadium, July 8, 9 and 10, along with Dimond, Service, Chugiak, South and West.
