Matt Emmons, the former UAF shooting star who owns one gold and two silver medals from Olympic rifle shooting, will shoot for more glory as a member of the 2012 Summer Olympics team, USA Shooting announced.
Emmons, who was diagnosed with thyroid cancer less than a year ago, has qualified for the team based on the points system used by USA Shooting.
Another former UAF shooter, Jamie Beyerlie, has also earned a spot on the team. She is the world's top-ranked three-position rifle shooter and a veteran of the last Olympics.
Emmons at the 2004 Olympics won a gold medal in prone and a silver in three-position -- an event he was leading until he cross-fired on his final shot of the competition. At the 2008 Olympics, he again was leading the three-position event but again had to settle for silver when his rifle accidently fired while he was lining up his final shot.
Emmons had his thyroid removed after being diagnosed with cancer in September. He was back in competition a few months later.
