AROUND THE HORN
-- The Oilers held off the Bucs 3-2 to vault past Anchorage and grab second place in the ABL. Peninsula's Manny Acosta and Mike Miller each drove in runs in a two-run fourth, giving the Oilers a 3-0 and the cushion it needed to survive a ninth-inning rally by the Bucs. Landon Anderson and Keenan Cook belted RBI singles to bring the Bucs within one run in the ninth before Ryan Palermo hit into a game-inning fielder's choice. The Bucs stranded 10 runners, including five in the first two innings.
-- AIA took the opener 5-3 but the Mat-Su Miners rebounded with a 5-0 romp in the second game of a doubleheader in Palmer. In the nightcap, Mat-Su's Matt Applegate upped his record to 3-0 by allowing AIA only two hits, walking none and striking out four over seven innings. The Miners erupted for four runs off five singles and a pair of walks in the second inning, loading the bases and scoring twice before making an out.
-- Fairbanks won for the second straight night at the Kamloops International baseball tournament, using a nine-strikeout effort from Matt Milke to subdue the host Sun Devils 4-0. Milke allowed two hits in the seven-inning game and got offensive support from Colton Plaia, who was 2 for 3 with two RBIs.
-- Eagle River will host its first Alaska Baseball League game tonight when the Anchorage Glacier Pilots play the Athletes in Action Fire at Loretta French Field. The field is on the Old Glenn Highway near the North Birchwood Loop. Admission is free and state Rep. Bill Stoltze (R-Chugiak), who will throw out the first pitch, is buying the first 500 hot dogs for fans.
