Bob Christal

Dates: 1992-2000

Where from: ASD deputy superintendent

Notable events: Mostly stable, calm tenure after two controversial superintendents. Three-day teachers strike, fall 1994. Upset community over his pay demands, 2000.

Why exited: Demanded huge raise, or to become an independent contractor managing the district, able to collect retirement pay plus contract money.

Board agreed to $160,000 independent contract but community controversy continued and Christal resigned.

Thomas C. O’Rourke

Dates: Nov. 1990-1992

Where from: North Syracuse Central School District, N.Y.

Notable events: Board bought out last 20 months of his contract for $284,000.

Why exited: Clashed with board members, though had followers on Assembly and elsewhere in community. Board president and vice president alleged O’Rourke improperly used public funds; audit showed only minor discrepancies.

Carl LaMarr

William D. Coats

Dates: 1987-1990

Notable events: New programs; budget shortfalls; police occupy ASD HQ during high school teacher-student sex scandal

Why exited: Took job in Fort Wayne, Ind.
