AROUND THE HORN
-- The Anchorge Bucs erupted for six runs in the seventh inning Tuesday afternoon at Mulcahy Stadium to log a 9-4 Alaska Baseball League win over Athletes in Action that marked their third straight victory and fifth in the last six games.
Leading 3-2, the Bucs blew open the game against reliever Michael White, who entered 4-0 with two saves and a 1.12 earned-run average, but struggled mightily in the seventh. He walked three, surrendered three hits and also was further undone by a wild pitch and an infield error.
Boomer Collins and Keenan Cook each drove in two runs for the Bucs. Starter Kyle Finnegan (3-3) picked up the win, scattering eight hits, striking out four and allowing two runs in five innings. Bradley Drust furnished two innings of shutout relief and Dylan Wisthoff pitched the last two innings, giving up a solo home run to Tyler Shryock.
AIA starter Andrew Work allowed just two hits in six innings, but walked five and absorbed the loss.
The Bucs pulled to within two and half games of the league-leading Peninsula Oilers, who were idle and have three league games in hand over the Bucs.
-- Kavin Keyes was in the hero business Thursday night at Mulcahy, and business was exceptional.
Keyes delivered a three-run double in the eighth inning and a game-winning two-run, walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to spearhead the Anchorage Glacier Pilots' remarkable 8-7 ABL win over the Mat-Su Miners.
The Pilots trailed 5-0 after six and a half innings, 6-2 after seven and a half innings and 7-5 entering the bottom of the ninth inning. Anchorage scored all of its run in the last three innings.
Maxx Garrett got the Pilots going with a two-run homer in the seventh to cut Mat-Su's lead to 5-2. Brady Hohl went 4 for 5 for Anchorage and scored two runs, and Cael Brockmeyer went 3 for 5 with a run scored.
Adam Martin and Kevin Lum each drove in two runs for Mat-Su and Michael Gerlach and Tim Zier each furnished three hits.
Keyes' heroics made a winner out of reliever Trevor Bayless (1-1).
