Anchorage runner wins Whitehorse marathon

Matias Saari of Anchorage wrapped up the equivalent of three marathon races in three weekends by capturing Sunday's Yukon River Trail Marathon in Whitehorse, Yukon.

Saari's victory gave him two victories and a third-place finish in the last three weekends. He finished third in the 24-mile Crow Pass Crossing from near Girdwood to Anchorage on July 23, then won the 14-mile Matanuska Peak Challenge near Palmer -- that race features 9,100 feet of elevation gain and an equal amount of descent -- on July 30.

Saari, 40, covered Sunday's 26.2-miler in Canada in 2 hours, 45 minutes, 47 seconds.

He beat runner-up Mike Kramer, his running buddy from Fairbanks, who clocked 3:01:46 to finish second.

Anchorage's Eeva Latouso finished second in the women's division in 3:50:25. Denise McHale of Whitehorse won the women's race, and finished fourth overall, in 3:11:51.
