Videos: PBS explores controversial Alaska dental therapist program

The PBS "Newshour" reported from the Bethel area this week as part of its series on what it calls a "crisis" of cost and accessibility in U.S. dental care. The first video below is "Newshour's" report on the controversial Alaska dental therapist program, which lets residents of remote villages get basic dental care without having to fly to a hub -- a program opposed by American Dental Association. (Read more on the therapist program in a 2010 ADN article.) In the second video, one of Alaska's rural dental therapists tells her own story. The third video is a report on the personal dental crisis, that of a Bethel woman whose chronic, painful condition forced her to quit her job and use her retirement savings for treatment.
