Avalanche damages home on Hiland Road

An avalanche rumbled down near Hiland Road in Eagle River Tuesay evening hitting a house and according to a fire official "leaving a substantial snow load inside the house." No one was home at the time.

Fire Capt. Ben Demboski said his crew was able to dig out the home's gas meter and electric connection and secure them.

The avalanche came down near Mile 7.6 of the twisting narrow road. It pushed in some walls and blew out windows when it hit, according to Demboski, who added it was fortunate the owners were not there at the time.

The owners returned while the firemen were on the scene but were unable to stay in the home.

Firefighters received a 911 call from a neighbor and responded a little before 9 pm.
