Jack Powers, the owner of Tudor Road Bingo who was one of the biggest boosters of the Anchorage Bucs baseball team, died Tuesday night at age 69, the Bucs reported Thursday.
The president of the club for 11 years, Powers is the second big loss for the baseball team, whose founder and longtime general manager, Dennis Mattingly, died Jan. 5.
"It's been a tough one," Bucs general manager Shawn Maltby said.
Powers, a Democratic candidate for lieutenant governor in 2010, was an entrepreneur perhaps best known for his bingo parlor, but he made his mark in many ways.
He was part of the Bucs almost from the beginning and served as the team's president for 11 years. He remained an honorary board member until the time of his death, Maltby said.
Powers was a generous donor to the Bucs and a variety of other organizations and causes. In 2005, he donated $25,000 to the Fur Rendezvous World Championship Sled Dog Championships at a time when the race was barely surviving. More recently, he donated $10,000 to a fund for Anchorage police officer Jason Allen, who was wounded in a drive-by shooting.
A public visitation will be held Monday from 4-8 p.m. at Janssen's Evergreen Memorial Chapel.
On Tuesday, a celebration of life and potluck will be held at Tudor Road Bingo beginning at 4 p.m.
