Markel, Erickson score slalom wins

Gabrielle Markel and Alex Erickson, a pair of Junior 1 racers for Alyeska Ski Club, won Thursday's weather-challenged slalom, the first of four races in the Alyeska Cup series in Girdwood. Other racers were in hot pursuit. Close behind Erickson, .74 seconds back, was Junior 2 racer Nicholas Crews, who in turn was only .07 in front of third-place Kevin Kelly.

A slim .68 separated the top five boys after the first run, but Erickson, who took both runs, increased his lead in the second run.

Among the girls, the race was for second place. Sarah Lundgren, a Junior 2 who finished second, and Junior 3 racers Margo Lane (third place) and Juliette Parke (fourth place) finished within .17 seconds of each other.

Markel had a dominant first run but Parke ran off with the second run, finishing nearly a second in front of Markel. But Markel's first-run time was more than enough to give her the victory.

Racing continues today with another slalom, this one for the state championship. Racers from Juneau, Fairbanks, Anchorage and Girdwood are competing for slots at the Junior Olympics.
