Markel, Kelly claim state slalom titles at Alyeska

Gabrielle Markel and Kevin Kelly prevailed as course conditions deteriorated but won in very different ways Friday to claim state slalom championships at the Alyeska Cup race series in Girdwood.

The top six girls, separated by only .97 seconds after the first run, played musical chairs. Only Sydney Henegan was consistent. She tied for second in the first run, was second on the second course and finished second overall. All the other top contenders traded places.

Markel was fifth after the first run and moved into first with the fastest second-run time. Jordan Lane, fourth after the first run, finished third. Aspen Sulte, the first-run leader, wound up fourth. Sarah Lundgren, third after the first run, ended up fifth. Juliette Parke, seventh in the first run, moved up to sixth, and Margo Lane, sixth in the first run, finished seventh.

The boys were more consistent. Kelly won both runs and Nick Crews was second in both. Alex Erickson finished third with the third fastest second run-time. Juneau's Matthew Vandor, who was third after the first run and trailed Crews by only .07, was disqualified on his second run.

The Alyeska Cup races continue today with a giant slalom beginning at 11:00 and a super-G at 3:45 p.m. Both events are on the Race Trail.
