UAA women dodge basketball upset

The eighth-ranked UAA women's basketball team needed a second-half comeback Saturday night to avoid a second straight loss on the road.

Haley Holmstead sparked the pivotal run that helped the Seawolves survive a scare from Montana State-Billings and claim a 56-51 Great Northwest Athletic Conference victory that keeps UAA in first place in the conference.

Holmstead's layup broke a 44-44 tie with 9 minutes, 38 seconds remaining and triggered an 11-2 run that put the Seawolves command.

Holmstead poured in seven points in the scoring spree and contributed to two more when Kaylie Robison tipped in one of Holmstead's misses for a basket. The junior guard finished with a game-high 19 points on 7 of 17 shooting.

UAA (20-4 overall, 11-2 GNAC) was coming off a Thursday loss to Seattle Pacific and struggled to take command Saturday against the Yellowjackets (16-8, 8-5).

Billings led 32-27 at the half and went up by eight points when Kelli Stanhope drilled a 3-pointer to open the second half.

The Seawolves answered with an 8-0 run -- getting a 3-pointer from Holstead, three points from Johansson and a tipin from Robison -- to tie the game 35-35 at 17:21.

The teams traded leads and were tied two more times before Holmstead's layup put the Seawolves in the lead for good, 46-44.

Robison contributed a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds and gave UAA lots of second chances thanks to her seven offensive rebounds. Hanna Johansson, held scoreless in the first half, added 14 rebounds and nine points and Alysa Horn chipped in nine rebounds and two blocked shots for the Seawolves.

Quinn Peoples, a freshman who hit four 3-pointers, led Billings with 16 points.

With the win, the Seawolves became the first team to clinch a spot in next month's GNAC tournament, which will feature the league's top six teams March 1-3 in Lacey, Wash.
