UAA skiers soar in Alyeska slaloms

UAA skiers dominated racing for a second day at Alyeska Ski Resort, with Alex Parker and Niko Harmanen winning state giant slalom championships Sunday in the final race of the Alyeska Cup series.

Parker, a UAA senior, was nearly a full second behind freshman teammate Vanessa Berther after the first women's run, but turned it on for the second course to nip Berther by .04 seconds overall. UAA's Anais Urbain finished third.

Alyeska Ski Club's Jordan Lane was the first Anchorage junior, in fourth, less than one second off the podium.

Harmanen was third after the first run, .38 seconds behind first-run leader Halfdan Falkum-Hansen, and .26 behind Cam Brewington. Harmanen won overall with the only sub-53-second run on the second course. Alyeska Ski Club's Kevin Kelly was the first junior with a well-earned seventh.

Ninety skiers from Anchorage, Girdwood, Juneau and Fairbanks competed. UAA skiers dominated the giant slaloms Saturday and Sunday in preparation for four Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate races this week at Alyeska.
