Randall 8th in Stockholm classic sprint

Although she already had wrapped up the women's overall sprint title on the World Cup circuit, three-time Olympian Kikkan Randall of Anchorage solidified her grip on it Wednesday, when she finished eighth in a classic sprint in Stockholm, Sweden, that marked the season's final sprint race in that technique.

Randall finished fourth in her semifinal.

"The semifinal didn't go quite as well as I would have liked,'' Randall wrote in an email. "I felt like I had the energy to be competitive on that stretch but I just can struggle technically in these conditions so I just spun the wheels a little bit there and was too late.

"Overall I'm pretty happy on the performance today. I'm still feeling strong. Eighth is my best finish here in Stockholm, so it's still a success.''

UAA's Wilt, Parker honored by GNAC

UAA senior Hallidie Wilt and freshman Cody Parker were named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference's women's and men's track and field athletes of the week, respectively, for their school-record performances Saturday at the Ben Brown Invitational in Fullerton, Calif.

Wilt clocked 10 minutes, 42.9 seconds in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to slash six seconds off her 2010 school standard and provisionally qualify for the Division II NCAA meet. Wilt's time is the third-fastest in GNAC history.

Parker winged the javelin 211 feet, 1 inch, to crush Casey Robinson's 2010 school record (175-7) by more than 35 feet. He also qualified provisionally for the NCAA's, and eight Seawolves athletes provisionally qualified with their performances Saturday.

The Seawolves this week are competing in California meets Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
