A young man from New York medevacked from Turnagain Pass early Saturday after being swept up in an avalanche remained hospitalized Sunday in Anchorage, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Ian Lacroix, 20, underwent surgery on Saturday for a broken leg he suffered after an avalanche enveloped him, said Ginger Houghton, spokeswoman for Providence Alaska Medical Center.
Lacroix was backcountry skiing with his brother and another man when the snow slab let loose. The avalanche was triggered around 8 p.m. Friday on Tin Can Mountain. As the snow moved down the mountain, Lacroix rolled out. The Alaska Air National Guard sent a helicopter to rescue him.
He is recovering well, Houghton said, relaying information from his family.
