Bill would tag student drivers' vehicles

JUNEAU -- Young Alaska drivers hitting the road with provisional licenses may soon have to carry around a state-issued sticker that says "student driver" to put on the rear window of any vehicle they drive.

Anchorage Republican Rep. Charisse Millett says the removable stickers she suggests in HB212 would make Alaska roads safer. A Millett aide said at a Wednesday House Finance Committee hearing that drivers would keep extra distance when alerted to nearby inexperienced drivers.

Committee members raised concerns. Rep. Anna Fairclough said labeling young drivers could make them easy targets for criminals. Rep. Mark Neuman said he was worried police officers would use the stickers as an excuse to hassle young drivers.

The committee held the bill but planned to continue discussion Thursday.
