A woman was shot in the head and "gravely injured" in a West Anchorage apartment early Monday evening and a man is in custody for the shooting, Anchorage police said. A man called 911 at 5:44 p.m. and reported that he had shot a woman in the head in their apartment, said police spokesman Lt. Dave Parker.
"He said he needed to go to jail," Parker said.
The man surrendered to police without incident when they arrived, Parker said.
The woman was rushed to the hospital, Parker said.
"She's gravely, gravely injured," he said.
The apartment is on 42nd Avenue just east of Wisconsin Street, Parker said.
Neither the woman nor the man taken into custody was immediately identified. Parker said the woman is 45 years old.
