Girls prep Soccer
South 4, East 0
Kaitlyn Zanders and Kayla Sims each notched a goal and an assist Wednesday, leading South to a 4-0 win over East in a Cook Inlet Conference girls soccer match at The Dome.
Zanders opened scoring in the 15th minute on an assist from Erin Stuart, and Sims extended the lead to 2-0 on an assist from Zanders in the 28th minute.
Vanessa Velez and Morgan Hooe added second-half goals, getting corner-kick assists from Stuart and Sims, respectively. Sarah Johnson and Michelle Cole shared goaltending duties for the Wolverines.
Boys prep soccer
Colony 3, Wasilla 0
Colony broke open a scoreless match with three second-half goals to beat Wasilla 3-0 in a Northern Lights Conference boys soccer match Wednesday at The Dome.
John Meaney struck first and Ben Atkinson and Lucas Hickle added insurance goals. Goalkeeper Ricky Kubacki picked up the shutout.
Karate
Four golds for Hjellen
Led by four gold medals from Christopher Hjellen, Alaskans won six golds at the USA Open International Karate Championships and Junior Olympics in Las Vegas last week.
Eight Alaskans, all from Tanaka's Martial Arts Academy in Anchorage and Palmer, faced competition from nearly 60 countries and combined to add six silver and three bronze to the medal total.

Lane leads Alaskans
Jordan Lane led a group of five Alyeska Ski Club members last week, placing 19th in a girls giant slalom at the Western Region Elite Spring Series in Mission Ridge, Wash.
Aspen Sulte was 29th in a girls slalom, Sydney Henegan notched top-30 finishes in two girls slalom events, and Sarah Powell took 34th in a girls super-G. Another 34th-place finish went to Kevin Kelly in a boys giant slalom.
The Spring Series continues Friday in Mt. Bachelor, Ore.
