Legislature passes resolution honoring Girl Scouts

JUNEAU -- The Legislature has passed a resolution that celebrates contributions of Girl Scouts to Alaska and names 2012 the "Year of the Girl."

SCR17, from Sen. Bettye Davis, D-Anchorage, coincides with the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts. The measure unanimously passed the Senate in February, and it moved through the House unopposed on Wednesday.

The measure attracted national attention last week when Rep. Wes Keller said he needed to investigate information "floating around the Internet" suggesting a connection between Girl Scouts and Planned Parenthood. Keller, the committee's vice-chair, conducted the hearing in Chairman Bob Lynn's absence.

Keller said he came back convinced the rumors are baseless, and the committee on Tuesday moved the bill without objection.

The resolution will be sent to Girl Scout leaders and Alaska's members of Congress.
