Library plans amnesty day for fines on overdue books

Fines for overdue library items will be forgiven if items are returned on Wednesday to any of the five public libraries, according a release from the municipal library system.

It is the first amnesty day for library books and other items in more than 25 years.

Amnesty only applies to items turned in on April 18. It does not apply to outstanding fines on a patron's account. While overdue fines for damaged materials will be waived, damage fees will not. Amnesty day does not apply to library patrons whose fees have been sent to collections.

Amnesty day is a way to honor Alfred Hanisch, a library donor, who died in 2010, according to the library release.
