Meals on Wheels drivers need them. So do Anchorage cabbies and teachers aides. There is no requirement in Alaska, however, that bar bouncers must undergo a criminal background check before hire.
Some security guards manning the doors at Anchorage bars have lengthy criminal records, as revealed by the March 15 indictment of former Rumrunner's bouncer Murville Lavelle Lampkin.
Lampkin served more than eight years in prison following a 1999 arrest for possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
Lampkin's attorney, Brent Cole, said the 39-year-old is a hard-working father who has made mistakes but "has been making significant strides" at rehabilitation.
"He's an easy target," Cole said, but prosecutors do not have the necessary evidence to charge him with the assault on 26-year-old Johnny Brown at Rumrunner's.
Here is a partial list of Lampkin's convictions, according to state and federal court records and Daily News accounts at the time:
1991
• Fourth-degree assault
• Burglary
1993
• Disorderly conduct
1998
• Assault on a police officer
• Misdemeanor vehicle theft
1999
• Distribution and possession of cocaine with intent to distribute (federal charge)
2000
• Domestic violence assault
2002
• Promoting contraband, fourth- and fifth-degree drug possession while in jail.
2009
• Lampkins is placed on supervised release, according to probation officer.
2011
• Driving under the influence
2012
• Pending felony assault charge
