Anchorage-based soldier killed by bomb in Afghanistan

An Anchorage-based soldier from California has been killed in Afghanistan.

The U.S. Army Alaska says in a release that 30-year-old Staff Sgt. Thomas Kent Fogarty of Alameda, Calif., died Sunday when the vehicle he was commanding hit a roadside bomb. Three other soldiers were wounded in the incident in Ahmad-Kheyl, Afghanistan, the Army says. All four are assigned to the 3rd Battalion (Airborne), 509th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.

Officials say Fogarty joined the Army in January 2004. He was stationed at JBER in January and left for Afghanistan three months later.
