Alaska sports roundup (5/21/12)

Being the only undefeated team in this week's Cook Inlet Conference softball tournament has its advantages.

East is the only team with a first-round bye when the tournament begins Monday at Albrecht Fields.

Using a potent offense and the seemingly tireless arm of pitcher Sydney Smith, the T-birds pummelled many opponents by double digits on their way to a 7-0 conference record (18-0 overall).

The T-birds will try to improve on last season's runner-up finish to Dimond, which is seeded sixth in the double-elimination format.

UAA's Bronga earns honor for academic excellence

UAA All-American skier Jaime Bronga was named to the Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District women's 'at-large' team Friday.

This is the senior's second straight year making first-team all-district, the East graduate earning a 3.99 overall GPA in civil engineering.

As an all-district selection, Bronga now advances to the national ballot for a chance to repeat last season's Academic All-America status.
