WORTH NOTING
The Peninsula Oilers rolled to their second straight shutout of the visiting Fairbanks Goldpanners with Thursday night's 6-0 seven-inning win in the opener of a doubleheader in Kenai, then rallied for a 3-1 win in the seven-inning nightcap.
Starter Brandon Kizer (five innings) and reliever Logan McAnallen combined on a four-hitter. Nate Ring contributed a bases-loaded triple in the second inning and Trey Richardson furnished a two-run home run in the third.
Ring triggered the Oilers' three-run sixth in the nightcap. He lashed a leadoff double, advanced to third base on a groundout and scored on Josh Miller's shallow sacrifice fly to foul territory in right field. The Oilers added two more runs on a wild pitch and subsequent throwing error by the Panners.
The Goldpanners have been outscored 17-1 in three games in Kenai.
In a non-league game at Mulcahy Stadium, four Anchorage Bucs pitchers combined on a three-hitter and Jordan Brink's two-run homer in the first inning stood up for a 2-1 win over the Anchorage Glacier Pilots.
The Chugiak Chinooks can't catch a break - their home opener was wiped out by rain for the second time this week.
The Chinooks, the rebranded version of the former Athletes in Action Fire, were scheduled to have their home opener Tuesday but it was rained out.
That made Thursday's scheduled game against Mat-Su the home opener, but persistent rain this week left Loretta French Field muddied, so that game was postponed.
