Collision injures 4, closes Seward Highway

A three-vehicle wreck hurt four people and closed the Seward Highway for a time Saturday between Anchorage and Girdwood, police said.

A string of three vehicles was headed southbound about 11:30 a.m. when the driver of the front vehicle decided to pull over to view sheep on the mountainside at Mile 111, near McHugh Creek, said police spokesman Lt. Dave Parker.

The second vehicle slowed and stopped as they waited for passing traffic, but the third plowed into the first two, Parker said.

One person from each vehicle was wounded, as was a child, who was cut above an eye, Parker said. That injury and the others did not appear to be life-threatening, he said.

Troopers spokeswoman Beth Ipsen said the wreck included two jeeps and occurred on a two-lane section of the highway, which had to be shut down about an hour for emergency responders.
