Worth noting

• First place in the Alaska Baseball League will be up for grabs Thursday night when the Glacier Pilots host the Peninsula Oilers in a doubleheader at Mulcahy Stadium.

The Pilots and Oilers both won Wednesday, the Pilots stopping the Bucs 8-5 to clinch the best-of-3 Mayor's Cup series and the Oilers topping the Chinooks 5-3 in Chugiak.

The Pilots are 14-8. The Oilers, who raced to a 5-0 lead over the Chinooks and then held on, are 15-9.

• The Mat-Su Miners scored 26 runs on 18 hits in 14 innings to sweep a doubleheader against the Goldpanners, 10-0 and 16-8.

Righthander Jay Calhoun pitched a six-hit shutout, striking out seven and walking none, to carry the Miners in the first game in Fairbanks. Calhoun faced 27 batters, just six over the minimum in the seven-inning game. The Miners banged out 13 hits and got home runs from Erik Harbitz and Bill Cullen. A three-run blast in the fifth inning helped Harbitz to a five-RBI, two-hit night.

In the 16-8 slugfest -- the Miners had 15 hits, the Goldpanners 14 -- the Miners got lots of production from the heart of the order. Cleanup hitter Clint Freeman drove in four runs with three hits and scored twice; No. 5 batter Branden Berry was 3 for 5 with three RBIs and Cullen, hitting sixth, added four RBIs, two runs and two hits, including his second homer of the night and his fifth for the season.

Mat-Su improved to 11-16. The Goldpanners fell to 10-12.

• The Chinooks (11-12) have Thursday off and return to action Friday with a home game against the Pilots. The Bucs (11-13) also have the day off and will head to Fairbanks for a three-day, four-game stand with the Goldpanners.
