WORTH NOTING
With Major League Baseball scouts taking notes, the Anchorage Glacier Pilots socked the Anchorage Bucs 8-1, the Mat-Su Miners downed the Peninsula Oilers 10-8 and the Fairbanks Goldpanners nipped the Chugiak Chinooks 2-0 in Friday's games at the Scout Showcase at Mulcahy Stadium.
The tournament games won't impact the Alaska Baseball League pennant race, because all tournament games are seven-inning non-league games.
The Pilots pounded out 10 hits and used six pitchers to subdue the Bucs and earn a split of the 12-game season series with their rivals. Kevin Cornelius, Tyler Spoon and Chris Mariscal all contributed two hits for the league-leading Pilots.
In Mat-Su's win, nine players got hits and eight scored runs in a seven-inning game loaded with offense. Branden Berry belted a two-run homer and Bobby Boyd drove in three runs for the Miners, while the Oilers got home runs from Nate Ring, Trey Richardson and Jordon Hein, who tallied two RBIs, two stolen bases, two hits and scored three times.
The Goldpanners were hitless through four innings but busted loose in the fifth with three hits -- a Chris Lee single, a Joey Epperson double and a Brady Renner double that scored Lee and Epperson. Patrick Hennesssy, making his first start, threw five shutout innings for the win.
The tournament continues Saturday with three more seven-inning nonleague games featuring the league's six teams. On Sunday, hitters will flex their muscles in the 1 p.m. Home Run Derby and then the summer's top players will play in the 4 p.m. ABL All-Star game.
