Eagle River man mauled by bear in critical condition

The 50-year-old man mauled by a grizzly bear Sunday while hiking above Eagle River Road was listed in critical condition Tuesday at Providence Alaska Medical Center, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Bob Eder, who lives near where he was attacked, on private land about two miles from the Eagle River Nature Center, suffered lacerations to his head, back and leg, police said. He fashioned a tourniquet from his shirt to curb the bleeding on his leg. He managed to walk about a half mile from where he was attacked to get closer to the road.

His family is declining all interview requests, hospital spokeswoman Crystal Bailey said.

"Thank you for the outpouring of support we have received. Bob's injuries are more serious than previously thought. We appreciate your respect for our privacy at this time," the family said in a statement.

Eder was hiking with his beagle up a private trail surrounded by thick brush when he startled the brown bear, according to state Fish and Game biologist Jessy Coltrane. He told her he saw four bears, indicating a sow and three older cubs.
