State American Legion tournament opens Friday

Top-seeded Kenai Post 20 leads 11 baseball teams in the 2012 American Legion Alaska State Tournament, which opens Friday with three games at Mulcahy Stadium.

All games in the week-long, double-elimination tournament, which could feature as many as 21 games, will be played at Mulcahy.

Kenai (29-8 overall) is seeded No. 1, followed by No. 2-seeded South Post 4 (17-10), No. 3-seeded Wasilla Post 35 (16-10) and No. 4-seeded Dimond Post 21 (23-8).

The winner of the tournament advances to the Northwest Regional, Aug. 9-13 in Billings, Mont.

Dimond 13, East 3

Dimond Post 21 finished American Legion baseball's regular season with a 13-3 win over East Post 34 at Chad Bax Field on Monday.

Sagan Osborne led the way for Dimond, driving in three runs on three hits, including a triple. Osborne also struck out four in seven innings to earn a win. Mitchell McCoy and Sean Bradley each notched three hits for Dimond, with Bradley driving in three runs and McCoy scoring three times.

Daelin Livingston and Bradley Hudson led East with two hits apiece, and Yeramy Valdez and Luke Schnellbaecher each added a hit and a run for East.

South 10, Eagle River 0

Josh Crapps, Conner Cucullu and Brad Butcher combined on a two-hitter Monday to earn South Post 4 a 10-0 victory over Eagle River in an American Legion baseball game.

Butcher rapped two hits and drove in three runs. Matt Ilalio delivered three hits and scored three runs, and Bryan Baker generated two hits and scored three runs.

SOFTBALL

City View 1-2 at regional

The state champion City View girls fast-pitch softball team is 1-2 at the Little League Western Regionals in San Bernardino, Calif., entering its final pool-play game Wednesday.

City View opened with a 6-1 loss to Southern California on Saturday, rebounded with a 12-6 victory over Montana on Sunday, then fell 14-0 to Utah on Monday. The Alaskans play Northern California on Friday.

Daisy Page leads City View in the tournament with a .625 batting average and a pitching win. Julia Tosi is hitting .556 and Tala Lauvale is hitting .375.

TRAPSHOOTING

State championships

Fairbanks' Brian Hughes (singles), Chugiak's Ben Olsen (doubles) and Eagle River's Justin Herrick (handicap) each earned state titles last week in the 2012 Alaska State Trapshoot Championships at Birchwood Recreation Shooting Park.

Also, Hughes and Anchorage's John Ulsher each won three events in the four-day championships, which featured 13 different events. Olsen won two titles. Also winning titles were Anchorage's Jim Tavis, Eagle River's Jim Fleming, Soldotna's John Lovell, Anchor Point's Carol Inman and Eagle River's Justin Herrick.

Fleming captured the high overall title by hitting 1,038 of 1,100 targets. He also took the high overall crown with 380 of 400.

The event drew 79 shooters and a total of 66,300 targets.
