Nenana resident dies in collision with moose and semi truck

A 19-year-old driver died in a collision with a moose and truck on the Parks Highway near Nenana early Wednesday, according to Alaska State Troopers.

Ashley Hecox, a Nenana resident, was headed south on the highway near Mile 286.5 in a Chevrolet Cobalt when she crashed into an adult cow moose that walked onto the roadway from the opposite lane, troopers said. The collision, at about 1:20 a.m., sent the car under a trailer pulled by a semi going the other way, and the car smashed into the trailer's back axles, troopers said.

Hecox was not wearing a seat belt, troopers said.

Robert Schmitt, the semi driver, was not injured, nor was the driver of another semi that struck debris from the wreck, troopers said. Both trucks were damaged.

Hecox's body was sent to the state medical examiner's office in Anchorage, troopers said.
