Wine of the week: 2009 St Hallett Faith Shiraz

You can't beat Australian reds for quality-price ratio -- those ancient soils and minuscule rainfalls create amazing concentrations and flavors. Barossa Valley was settled in the mid-1800s, and to this day remains an icon of quality. From there we get the 2009 St Hallett Faith Shiraz, with its beautiful strawberry and herbal fruits. These are real aromatics; nothing contrived here. Ripe black fruits, licorice, mild tannins and an acidic length all combine for a great time in the mouth. Flank steak, skirt steak, tri-tip or lamb would be in heaven here! Costs about $15.
