The local farmers are pretty excited about what's showing up in their fields.
From Mark Rempel, who will have items at Wednesday's Northway Mall Market and Saturday's South Anchorage Farmers Market: "New this week at the Rempel Family Farm will be Romanesco cauliflower, a beautiful pale green study in Fibonacci spirals that tastes delicious!"
Alex Davis of A.D. Farm and the two Center Markets says: "We are finally getting a little steam on the veggies. Friday, Kathy and I were pleased to pick the first cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower of the season. Good news, we will be picking it steady until winter sets in; pray for a good Indian summer. "
And from Sarah Bean of Arctic Organics and the Anchorage Farmers Market: "We're happy to report that we'll be bringing young carrots to market this weekend! It's important to come early for the carrots, though. We know people have been eager to get a hold of them."
The arrival of those crops indicate that summer is well along and the sometimes chilly mornings indicate autumn isn't too far off.
At the Spenard Farmers Market on Saturday, there are plenty of reasons to visit. First, the market is sponsoring Bird TLC Day. Secondly, the market is matching food stamps this week. QuestCard holders who purchase $10 worth of tokens will receive a match of $10 to spend on fresh Alaska produce. Limit one per QuestCard holder. And third, there is plenty of produce and food to load up with.
Urban Bamboo will be at the market this weekend with their gourmet food cart fare, along with other food vendors like Bistro Red Beet, Tacos Emporio, Da Kine BBQ, and Grandma's Kitchen. Veggie growers will include Chugach Farms, Fresh International Gardens, Glacier Valley Farm, Dinkel's Farms, Wild Rose, Spring Creek, Bautista's, Midnight Sun Farm and Grass Roots.
In addition to Davis' new produce at the Center Market, he also has pickling cucumbers, zucchini, four types of lettuce, salad mix, spinach, fresh duck and chicken eggs and a full lineup of pasture-raised pork cuts. Duane Clark will be at the market with grass-fed beef and free-range chicken and duck. He also will have perennial flowers and cut herbs. Another highlight will be the return of shelled peas, which will be available at several markets around town.
The South Anchorage Market will feature several produce vendors. In addition to the previously mentioned cauliflower, the Rempel Family Farm will have carrots, beets, mizuna, collard greens, onions, arugula, kale, bok choi, turnips, broccoli, green cabbage, zucchini, kohlrabi, new potatoes and cilantro, among other items. Glacier Valley Farm will have strawberries, zucchini, tomatoes, cucumbers and lots of onions. Southfork will be there with fireweed jelly, pickles and zucchini relish.
Also at the South Anchorage market Arctic Choice will have side-stripe shrimp, spot shrimp, oysters in the shell, razor clam meats, scallops, golden king crab, along with coho and sockeye salmon, halibut, cod, rockfish, and sablefish.
A big lineup of vendors is expected at the Anchorage Farmers Market, including Bushes Bunches, Arctic Organics, Seldovitsch Farm, Persistent Farmer, Matanuska Creamery, Hett's Peas, Stockwell Farm, VanderWeele Farm, LivinGreen, Vera's Greenhouses, ACAT compost tea, Fee's Custom Seafood and Turkey Red Cafe.
In addition to the new carrots, Arctic Organics should have cabbage; broccoli; baby beets with greens (red and Chioggia); white turnips; kohlrabi; Toscano, red Russian, Redbor and Winterbor kales; rainbow chard; collards; spinach; zucchini; tat soi; radishes; arugula; wild baby arugula; greens mix; and a variety of other items, including herbs and cut flowers.
