Our View: Nunaka Valley softball

It wasn't a complete surprise. After all, Nunaka Valley junior girls softball teams have been running with the big girls for years now. But it was sweet indeed for the team of 12- to 14-year-olds when they won the Junior Little League Softball World Series on Saturday in Kirkland, Wash.

They did it with drama -- outfielder Felila Manu snagging a shot to deep center field in the top of the seventh inning when Victoria, B.C., had runners on first and third. Nunaka held its breath, then exhaled as world champs.

"I can't even put it into words," winning pitcher Lauren Syrup told the Daily News. Syrup and fellow veterans Taria Page, Morgan Hill, Hannah Peterson and Jacynne Augafa -- who finished a clutch double play at the plate to kill an early Victoria threat -- will have some time to find the words.

They should. As one online commenter pointed out, they have a wonderful answer to the question about what they did this summer. What they did they'll remember for the rest of their lives.

Way to finish business, girls.
