ONGOING

Becoming an Outdoors Woman

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game conducts hands-on workshops that teach adult women outdoor skills while building their confidence in their ability to get out and safely enjoy all that Alaska has to offer. No experience is necessary and BOW is for women of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. The workshops are designed primarily for women, but anyone 18 years of age or older may participate. Men can and do attend the workshops too. BOW workshops are held year round in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Kodiak, and Southeast Alaska. Classes vary according to season but focus on three areas: shooting and hunting, fishing, and other outdoor activities.

The workshops span a weekend, beginning at noon on Friday and ending around 2 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Participants choose from a variety of classes such as the basics of big game hunting, field dressing, spin and fly fishing, snow machining, archery, dog mushing, kayaking, skijoring, cross-country skiing, canoeing, canning and smoking fish, wild edible plants, survival, map and compass, tracking and trapping, and outdoor cooking. On average, $250 covers room, board, instruction, and instructional materials for the weekend workshop. Some classes, such as fur sewing and field dressing big game, have additional fees because of supplies. For more information, visit www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=outdooreducation.bow..
