Anchorage woman is convicted in roommate's death

A 67-year-old Anchorage woman has been convicted of second-degree murder for fatally shooting her longtime roommate.

The Anchorage District Attorney's office says in a release that Berne Peterson was convicted Friday in a bench trial in the April 20, 2011, death of 57-year-old Colleen Fukuda. She faces from 10 to 99 years when she's sentenced Nov. 29.

Authorities determined Fukuda was shot at close range while she was under the covers of her bed.

Police at the time said Peterson often required assistance walking and became upset when Fukuda didn't help walk her to the bathroom. A shotgun was found in the home. Officers noted Peterson was intoxicated when they arrived.

Peterson has acknowledged she shot Fukuda, but said it was accidental.
