Wildlife center residents dine on giant state fair leftovers

PORTAGE -- Big animals are chowing down on giant vegetables.

The bears, moose, elk and bison at the Alaska Conservation Center are being served up giant vegetables from the Alaska State Fair. The Portage center says the animals will be partaking in a truckload of giant cabbages, zucchinis, turnips, radishes and gourds. The super-sized vegetables are too big and tough for human consumption but the animals don't seem to mind.

The majority of the food will be loaded onto a tractor and driven into the bear enclosure on Friday and Saturday.

The bears will be allowed to sort through the food and pick out favorites. Any extra cabbages will be reserved for the center's moose, elk and bison.
