Local providers lag behind

As I sit here and surf the Web on my smartphone, I've come to realize just how far behind the curve our local Internet providers have become. AT&T wireless has just enabled 4G LTE in the Anchorage area, allowing smartphones and tablets to connect to the Internet at mind-blowing speeds.

If you are unfamiliar with LTE, it's fast. "Down South" fast. Speeds so fast they are nearly double what both GCI and ACS offer for our home Internet here in Anchorage.

With technology like this being brought to Alaska from Outside companies, it makes me wonder why our local providers continue to charge us outrageous fees for such low-quality bandwidth. Hopefully this new competition will level the playing field by driving prices down and providing increased access for students, businesses and home users alike.
