Investigation of 74-year-old Kiana woman's death continues

Alaska State Troopers are continuing to investigate the suspicious death of a 74-year-old Kiana woman but are saying little about what appears to have happened.

Dolly Smith was found dead in her Kiana home Friday night. Her body was flown to Anchorage for an autopsy, which should happen Monday, said trooper Capt. Barry Wilson.

Troopers have not labeled the death a homicide. They are awaiting results from the state medical examiner, Wilson said. No one has been arrested or is being detained, he said.

Her death is suspicious because of "the circumstances -- how the victim was reported deceased and where she was found," said Wilson, who oversees the Western Alaska trooper detachment.

Her death initially was reported over VHS radio by someone troopers are not identifying. A community health aide and family members then rushed to the home.

She was found dead there, but troopers aren't providing further details, he said.

Two troopers from Kotzebue are in Kiana conducting interviews. The village of about 375 people is on the Kobuk River 57 miles east of Kotzebue.

Investigators from the Alaska Bureau of Investigation already collected evidence from the scene and left the village Sunday morning, he said.

Troopers ask anyone with information to call them in Kotzebue at 1-907-442-3222.
