Judge's ruling, $5,000 payment to Miller end costly lawsuit

A Superior Court judge has issued a final judgment in the Joe Miller lawsuit stemming from the 2010 U.S. Senate campaign in Alaska, bringing an end to the case.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reported Wednesday that Judge Stephanie Joannides accepted terms of the agreement penned in mid-June between the former Republican candidate, the Fairbanks North Star Borough and former borough Mayor Jim Whitaker.

The borough and Whitaker have agreed to jointly pay $5,000 to end the long-running and costly lawsuit. However, they deny any admission of fault relating to Miller's claims that someone at the borough improperly released details of his personnel files during his campaign.

Borough Mayor Luke Hopkins said the borough has already cut a check for Miller.

Court documents in the case show that the Fairbanks North Star Borough was seeking information that the former U.S. Senate candidate fought to keep secret before he accepted $5,000 to end the lawsuit.

The borough wanted information about Miller's legal fees and how he was paying them.
