Tuesday Night Race Series canceled by threat of wind

The popular Bonny Sosa Tuesday Night Race Series canceled its race at Service High because expected high winds raised the possibility of falling trees.

The race series, in its 45th season, sometimes draws more than 1,000 runners, from adults to pre-schoolers, and is one of the most popular recreational events in the area.

A spokeswoman for the city, which organizes and oversees the series, said a race has been added on Nov. 6 and the series' annual awards banquet and desserts potluck has been pushed back one week to Nov. 13.

COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL

Seawolf honored

Freshman outside hitter Sarah Johnson of Anchorage, who helped propel the UAA volleyball team to a pair of five-set victories last week, has been named the Great Northwest Athletic Conference's Offensive Player of the Week.

Saturday, Johnson racked career highs of 18 kills, 17 digs and a .341 attack percentage in a home-court victory over Northwest Nazarene. That came after Thursday's win over Central Washington in which she bombed 16 kills and added 15 digs.

UAA (7-3, 2-0 GNAC), which has won six straight matches, hits the GNAC road for the first time this season when it plays at Western Oregon on Thursday and at Saint Martin's on Saturday.

Dimond owns a commanding lead in the Cook Inlet Conference about two-thirds of the way through flag football's regular season.

The Lynx are 9-0 -- CIC teams play 14 regular-season games -- and own a three-game lead over West after beating the Eagles 19-0 on Saturday. West (6-3) sits in second place after losing consecutive games, to Eagle River and Dimond, for the first time this season.

East and Chugiak are tied for third place with 5-4 records, though East won the only meeting between the teams so far, 12-0.
