SITKA-- A "glacier deer" has been spotted in Southeast Alaska.
KCAW reports Alaska Department of Fish and Game biologist Phil Mooney spotted the white-ish Sitka black-tailed deer last month on Baranof Island.
He was being flown to a ridge to tag mountain goats when he saw a herd. He initially thought a goat was with them, but it was actually just the deer as part of the herd.
He says the deer has a very light, blueish-gray color. Bruins are called "glacier bears" when they are this color.
But Mooney says such bears or deer are not albinos. Instead, the coloring is from a recessive gene found occasionally on Admiralty, Baranof and Chichagof islands.
