West flag football team stops South late

Shiccia Harris-Grant's fourth-quarter touchdown run lifted West to a 19-18 win over South in a Cook Inlet Conference flag football game Friday at Anchorage Football Stadium.

Harris-Grant, who also threw a seven-yard touchdown pass to Annie Rush in the first quarter, scored the game-winner when she sprinted into the right corner of the end zone from five yards out with less than five minutes remaining.

West trailed 18-7 early in the third quarter, but Anna Sophia-Roberts put the Eagles on the comeback trail with a 25-yard scoring run to make it 18-13 before the third period ended.

South scored all three of its touchdowns on passes from Sierra Mains, who connected with Sarah Lundgren, Sabrina Ungaro and Julia Carmack on the scores. The Wolverines had a chance to win in the game's closing seconds, but the West defense stood strong on two consecutive downs inside its own 10-yard line to close the win.

"We had a great defensive game," West coach Travis Cantrell said. "Our defense won this game for us."
