Search continues for Super Cub bound for Palmer area

A Palmer pilot and his plane are still missing more than two days after he was last seen at the Soldotna Airport, troopers say.

Brendan Mattingly of Palmer and his red, white and green Piper PA-18 Super Cub have not been seen since a taxi driver dropped Mattingley off at the airport Saturday morning, Alaska State Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said Monday.

"All we know is pilot is unaccounted for and the plane is unaccounted for," Peters said.

Searchers from the Alaska State Troopers, the Alaska Air National Guard and several civil air patrol groups are looking for the pilot as well as friends and family, said guard spokesman Maj. Guy Hayes.

The Air Guard is conducting a "grid search" of the area between Soldotna and Wolf Lake, an airport between Palmer and Wasilla where Mattingley was thought to be heading.

Icy conditions and a low cloud ceilings have posed problems for searchers, Hayes said.
