Alaska High School Roundup: Oct. 18

The Chugiak and West volleyball teams played an epic fourth set Thursday night that lasted more than 30 minutes and ended with Chugiak winning the set and the match, 25-21, 20-25, 25-22, 30-28.

"That last one was a barnburner," West coach Mike Vincent said. "It was phenomenal volleyball to watch, even on the losing side. It was incredible -- great athletes making great plays, at the net, in the back row.

"I've still got goosebumps. To compete at that level, it's so exciting."

Chugiak libero Kara Haeussler racked up 30 digs -- "That tells you what kind of night it was," Vincent said -- and Elle Gray tallied 13 kills and 17 digs in the Cook Inlet Conference match at West High.

For West, Rita Dexter slammed 16 kills and Jenn Evans contributed 21 assists and five aces.

Service 3, Eagle River 1

The Service Cougars celebrated a special occasion Thursday with a 25-17, 13-25, 25-16, 25-10 victory over Eagle River in a CIC volleyball match at Service.

"It was Senior Night, and our seniors did great," Service coach Bryan Stenehjem said.

Leading the way for the Cougars was senior Brianna Toomer (15 kills, 14 digs, two aces). Senior Erin Hess chalked up 34 assists and senior Genny Boots had eight kills and two blocks. Junior Tayleigh Talmadge added another eight kills.

Braves trip Bartlett

The Mt. Edgecumbe volleyball team, a Class 3A squad, walked off with a four-set victory over Class 4A Bartlett on Thursday at Bartlett.

The Braves, of Sitka, won the nonconference match 25-11, 23-25, 25-15, 25-11.

RIFLERY

Chugiak 5, Eagle River 2

Eagle River won the A team, but Chugiak delivered victories in the B and C teams Thursday to earn a 5-2 victory in a Cook Inlet Conference riflery match.

Eagle River's Cathryn Papasodora fired a 285 and Tristan Henderson scored 283 to give the Wolverines the two highest scores. Chugiak's Sullivan Gilley shot 281 to lead his team.
