Willow man killed in Parks Highway crash

A 19-year-old Willow man died in a one-vehicle rollover at Mile 76.8 of the Parks Highway near Kashwitna Lake Monday morning, Alaska State Troopers report.

Based on a preliminary investigation, Zackary Green was driving a 1983 Jeep south on the highway when he briefly fell asleep and drifted onto the shoulder, trooper spokeswoman Beth Ipsen said.

He then over-corrected and crossed to the ditch on the opposite side of the highway, where the vehicle rolled, she said.

Green talked to emergency medical workers when they arrived and told them about falling asleep. He died at the scene soon after, Ipsen said.

Troopers don't know whether he was wearing a seat belt.

The accident was reported at 8:48 a.m.

Green was a contractor for the Daily News and delivered newspapers to homes in Talkeetna, said Roger Weinfurter, the Daily News circulation director.

He had completed his route when the accident happened, Weinfurter said. He had signed on as a carrier last Friday.
