Alaska sports digest for Oct. 27

Erin Phillips and Hallidie Wilt scared up victories in the Frightening 4-K held downtown Saturday.

The race drew about 200 runners, most of them in costume. Phillips covered the four kilometers in 12 minutes, 35 seconds to top the men and Wilt led the women in 13:28, a time that placed her fourth overall.

Dunbar 3rd in Pac 12

Kodiak's Trevor Dunbar grabbed third place at the Pac 12 cross country championships Saturday in Santa Clarita, Calif.

Dunbar was the top finisher for the Oregon men, who placed third behind Colorado and Stanford. He and teammate Parker Stinson, who finished fourth, clocked identical times of 23 minutes, 28 seconds.

The top two spots when to Arizona runners Lawi Lalang (22:49) and Stephen Sambu (22:50), who are both from Kenya. Lalang, a sophomore, is the defending NCAA champion.

Volleyball

Soldotna 3, Kenai 0

Soldotna's volleyball team beat Kenai in three sets Saturday behind 16 digs and four aces from Natalie Kress and 12 kills and four blocks from Kaillee Skjold.

Heidi Westerman dished out 25 assists for the Stars in the 25-9, 25-16, 25-14 victory at Kenai. The teams head to Kodiak this week for the conference championships.

Riflery

Dimond freshmen dominate

Morgan Byrne edged teammate Hannah O'Brien by one point to lead a Dimond sweep of the top three spots Saturday in the Freshman Riflery Open High at South High.

Byrne shot a 274 for top honors. Hannah O'Brien followed with a 273 and Seth Franklin was third with a 271.

Prep wrestling

Bethel wins ACS tournament

Getting individual victories from Bruce Crow, Brayton Lieb and Trevour Chavez, the Bethel wrestling team ran way with a team title at the Lime/Solar ACS Wrestling Invitational at Anchorage Christian.

Bethel scored 258.5 points to outpace second-place Kotzebue (177.5) by more than 80 points. Valdez finished third with 138 points.

Crow took first with a pin in the final match of the 285-pound division, Lieb won by decision at 152 pounds and Chavez topped the 160 weight class with a win by decision.

Tennis

Haines wins twice

Aaron Haines advanced to the finals in men's open singles and men's open doubles Saturday at the Birch Horton Bittner and Cherot state tennis championships at the Alaska Club North.

Haines beat Rendell Burghart 6-0, 6-0 in a singles semifinal match and teamed with Jimmy Kayongo for a 6-1, 6-2 win over Brad Luczkow and Jody Wolfe in a men's doubles quarterfinal match.
