It was a good day for defending champions Friday in the preliminary round of the state swimming and diving championships at the Bartlett High Pool.

The defending champion Kodiak girls posted five top qualifying times in swimming events and the three-time defending champion Dimond boys recorded four top qualifiers, including diver Cade Bennett, who broke the Cook Inlet Conference 1-meter diving record last week and is looking to break the state record Saturday.

The Kodiak girls have a pair of powerful sophomores in Ila Hughes and Tahna Lindquist, who each won two individual state titles as freshmen last season. Their experience is an asset this week, Kodiak coach John Lindquist said.

"They're a little more under control and they know how to get energized at the right time," he said.

Hughes began defense of last season's state titles in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle by posting the top time in each Friday. She finished the 50 in 24.35 seconds and tied with Chugiak freshman Emmie Jennings for the best time in the 100 at 53.27.

"Ila, she's a beast," said Kodiak senior Jorie Lindquist, who was top qualifier in the girls 200 freestyle Friday. "She just loves to race."

Tahna Lindquist is trying to defend her titles in the 200 individual medley and 500 freestyle, becoming top qualifier in each event with times of 2:11.29 and 5:13.42, respectively. She is also one of the more energetic members of the Kodiak team.

"Tahna, she's the fun one I guess," her sister Jorie said. "She definitely tries to lighten things up and make us have a good time."

Jorie Lindquist won a state title in the 200 freestyle in 2010, finished second in the event during what she called a down junior season and has come back stronger in search of a second state title.

Her qualifying time of 1:55.87 was more than two seconds faster than Dimond's Jenny Wilcox.

"Swimming has been like my life and it's kind of a really rough journey," Jorie said. "This year I realized I'm like in love with swimming and everything it brings to me and I'm just like trying to make everyone on the team see how much fun it is."

Two swimmers on the boys side were top qualifiers in two events Friday. Sitka's Louis Belley was fastest in the 200 individual medley and the 100 backstroke, and Petersburg's Abel Auelbach posted top times in the 50 and 100 freestyle.

Auelbach, who finished fourth in the 100 freestyle and sixth in the 50 freestyle as a freshman last season, said he rededicated himself to practicing for 90 minutes every day after school in the offseason. A swimmer since he was five, the Petersburg product feels good about Saturday's finals, but isn't going in with any expectations.

"I'm just gonna hope for the best," he said.

As for the Dimond boys, who are coming off their sixth straight CIC title last weekend, three swimmers were top qualifiers. Ursin Jackson was fastest in the 200 freestyle, Michael Summers in the 500 freestyle and Jarod O'Brien in the 100 breast stroke.

All eyes will be on Bennett, the defending state boys diving champion Saturday, however, as he attempts to break a long-standing state record. Alvin Spencer's 1982 record of 517.25 is within reach after Bennett scored 227.70 in five preliminary dives Friday. Bennett, who scored a 551.15 in last week's CIC meet to shatter Spencer's conference record, will perform three semifinal dives and three final dives Saturday.

Chugiak senior Kaitlin Friedli positioned herself for a second straight girls diving title. Her 171.40 was more than five points better than Eagle River freshman Jami Stone's 165.55.

After a below-average first dive, Friedli regained her focus by leaving the side of the pool between dives. She came back with a stellar second dive, an inward 11/2 that made a few spectators gasp at how near the board she was during entry. Of course, being close to the board is a sign of a good dive.

"You are only supposed to be about a foot from the board," Friedli said.

Friedli and Stone are friends from the days they used to compete in gymnastics together, so there won't be any heated rivalry when the diving semifinals begin at 9:30 a.m.

"We're like sisters," Stone said.

The swimming and diving finals begin with the girls 200 medley relay at 1 p.m.
