Letter: Help keep Alaska’s veterans from falling through the cracks

Alaska has the highest percentage of veterans per capita in the United States. Unfortunately, for some veterans, the transition to civilian life is difficult. In the first year of operating the VA Supportive Services for Veteran’s Families (SSVF) grant, Catholic Social Services served 280 people (veterans and their families) — approximately 270 percent over the number we estimated.

We are thankful this grant is so innovative; it allows us to serve the veteran’s family, not just the veteran, and allows us to supply the missing piece in the current umbrella of VA services by addressing some of the most pressing needs of homeless veterans and their families — rent, security deposits and transportation.

On this Veteran’s Day, please join CSS in thanking our veterans for their service. There is no better time to reach out to the men and women who have so courageously served our country and encourage those in need of assistance to seek the help that is available to them to attain the goal of housing stability for themselves and their family.
