BOYS PREP HOCKEY

E. River 4, Chugiak 3

Brett Wood's power-play strike in the opening minute of the third period held up as the game-winning goal and Eagle River bounced back from an early two-goal deficit to beat Chugiak, 4-3, in a Cook Inlet Conference boys hockey game Tuesday night.

Chugiak scored three times in a span of 2 minutes, 31 seconds in the first period -- Taylor Garner, William Casey and Hunter Hanson tallied, the latter two on the power play -- to seize a 3-1 lead.

But Eagle River's Gage Nehilla scored later in the period and Carter Jesiel forged a 3-3 tie with his goal in the second period. Bryan Grant scored Eagle River's goal in the first period.

South 6, West 2

Steven Orizotti scored two goals and set up another, and Nathan Wright stopped 19 shots Tuesday night, when South earned a 6-2 Cook Inlet Conference boys hockey victory at Ben Boeke Arena.

Tanner Cogdon added one goal and one assist for South, which also received goals from Cameron Klatt, Daniel Haider and Ronald Perry.

Steven Gustafson and Ryder Schwamm scored goals for West, which received 25 saves from Joe Chekan.

GIRLS PREP HOCKEY

Service-East cruises

Kaitlan Miknich scored goals two minutes apart in Service-East's four-goal first period Tuesday night on the way to a 6-1 victory over Chugiak-Eagle River in a Cook Inlet Conference girls hockey game at the McDonald Center in Eagle River.

Heather Merkouris and Felila Manu each contributed one goal and one assist for Service-East, which produced a 28-3 advantage in shots.

Autumn Sperry scored Chugiak-Eagle River's goal.

Quake, 49ers update

After playing each other in their season openers, the Alaska Quake and Alaska 49ers face out-of-state American Basketball Association competition this weekend at Begich Middle School.

The 49ers, a first-year team, take on the Sacramento Heatwave in a 7 p.m. game Saturday and the Quake, a second-year ABA team, play Sacramento at 4 p.m. Sunday.

The Quake are coming off a big 144-117 win Saturday over the 49ers that featured a 37-point game from newcomer Chris Bryant, a former 3-point specialist for the UAA men's team. Bryant added 10 rebounds and three steals.

Julius Cumlat racked up 17 points and 16 assists, Carl Arts grabbed 16 points and nine rebounds, Lonnie Ridgeway pumped in 23 points and Ben Robinson chipped in 18 points for the Quake.
