Anchorage Museum opens traditional holiday exhibition

"Wonderland of Toys" on view Nov. 23 through Jan. 13

For many Alaska families, journeying to the Anchorage Museum to see "Wonderland of Toys" is a beloved holiday tradition. Between Thanksgiving and New Year's, the museum's atrium is transformed into a dazzling tableau of toys, some that date back as far as the 1800s. Against a backdrop of twinkling lights and tinsel, find carousel horses, World War I toy soldiers, antique European dolls, and a towering evergreen tree decorated with more than 100 dolls wearing costumesfrom around the world.

Highlights include:

A charming 30-piece, hand-painted wood Schoenhut Humpty Dumpty circus created in 1908 in Germany.

A completely furnished Victorian-style dollhouse. The late Anchorage attorney Hal Horton built the dollhouse for his granddaughter, and when she outgrew it, he donated it to the museum. The dollhouse includes a replica Sydney Laurence painting above the fireplace mantel.

Carousel horses. Local collector Linda Walsh has loaned the museum several carousel animals from her extensive collection, which she has carefully restored.
